Creative Assembly is reportedly developing a Total War: Star Wars game, adapting the iconic sci-fi franchise into the developer’s massive-scale RTS series.

As one of three new Total War games in development, Total War: Star Wars will mark the second time the RTS series adopts another IP after the Total War: Warhammer trilogy.

According to a report by DualShockers, the new Star Wars game has been in development since October 2023 alongside two other Total War titles. Although the report did not discuss the other two games, they are expected to be based on the series’ usual historical settings.

Unfortunately, few details have emerged regarding Creative Assembly’s Star Wars title. It remains unclear which era or eras the game will focus on, whether it will feature only ground-based combat, or if space battles will be included as well.

Star Wars fans have long begged for a new RTS game since the release of Empire at War. Released in 2006, this Star Wars RTS game was set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope and offered both a Rebellion and Empire campaign.

As of now, players can still enjoy Empire at War online following the reactivation of multiplayer servers in 2017. No new content has been added to the game since its 2006 expansion, Empire at War: Forces of Corruption.

Total War fans have eagerly anticipated the series taking on more famous IPs since the release of the phenomenal Warhammer games. While many hoped for a Warhammer 40,000 RTS featuring Space Marines, Orcs, Tyranids, and more, a Total War: Star Wars game sounds incredible.

Creative Assembly has a strong track record with other IPs outside the Total War series. The 2013 game Alien: Isolation received critical acclaim for its perfect recreation of the Alien aesthetic, including its soundtrack. Additionally, 2016’s Halo Wars 2 was so successful it influenced the future direction of the franchise.

If any studio can be trusted with the Star Wars license, RTS or otherwise, it is Creative Assembly.
