A lot of fans are excited to jump into the world of DOOM: The Dark Ages, and it’s going to be presenting a whole new setting in the form of the Cosmic Realm.
Just in, id Software has dropped a new featurette giving a look at this new DOOM location, and it reveals a new Eldritchian world filled with all kinds of new nightmares never-before-seen in the games.
DOOM: The Dark Ages - The Cosmic Realm
In a recent reveal for the game, director Hugo Martin gives a look at the Cosmic Realm; not quite Hell, but it’s no paradise either. Check this out:
“We have fantastic worlds to explore throughout this world. One of them is totally unique for a DOOM game; a space we’ve never been to, but a world I’ve wanted to incorporate into the DOOM universe for a while—the Cosmic Realm.”
While the monsters from previous DOOM games have a very specific aesthetic, the horrors found in the Cosmic Realm are more inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s signature brand of horror, so you can expect all kinds of tentacles and nightmare creatures that will make you dread your existence. The description continues:
“You will bear witness to the Cyclopean level to this Lovecraft dimension as you explore its darkest secrets and battle its most insane enemies. An unholy union between Hell and the Cosmic Realm has been formed. Why, you ask? You’re going to need to watch the story to find out.”
The reveal also comes with a look at a new weapon called the Reaver Shot which is part gun/part melee weapon as it shoots a ball and chain at enemies.
When Does DOOM: The Dark Ages Take Place?
It’s been confirmed that The Dark Ages actually takes place before the events of 2016’s DOOM, making it a prequel.
So far story details have been kept under wraps, but besides knowing that it’s going to be a prequel, we know that the protagonist is still going to be another DOOM Slayer. Plus, he’s going to come with all kinds of demonic/futuristic weapons that look like they’ve been ripped straight out of Warhammer 40,000.
One thing’s for sure, the game still looks metal as f*ck and it’s going to be filled with all the action and violence that’s signature to the brand of DOOM.
Watch out for DOOM: The Dark Ages when it launches on May 15 for the PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S.
