Breakdown
- MultiVersus is finally returning on May 28
- The game is completely rebuilt with Unreal Engine 5
- New characters and stages promised, old characters getting new moves
MultiVersus will be coming out this May, free from the game’s confusing “open beta” phase and completely rebuilt with Unreal Engine 5. This is very good news for platform fighter fans, as the lack of news had many worried that it would get canceled and never return.
An official video update from developer Player First Games has confirmed that the crossover platform fighter will officially come out on May 28. Game Director Tony Hyunh said that they listened to fan feedback from the open beta, implementing a ton of changes for a much better experience.
Hyunh reveals that MultiVersus will now be running on Unreal Engine 5, making the characters and environments look a lot better than they did before. Implementing these new visuals seemed to be a crucial move, as this will reportedly make the game run better with the online servers planned.
Characters are also getting new moves, giving everyone more combo potential than ever before. There are also plans to add new characters and stages, which is expected since this is a free-to-play live-service game. Hopefully, the in-game purchases made by fans during the beta will remain, since that’s still real money that was spent.
The return of MultiVersus could be a good thing, though it’s hard not to be worried since this is a Warner Bros.-approved video game. It does fit with the company’s obsession to monetize all of its games, as it is free-to-play and will be updated constantly with more content.
Fans also haven’t forgotten the game’s confusing beta phase, where they released paid season passes while claiming it was still in Early Access. The fact that it was removed after a while, unlike other Early Access games, was very annoying for players who invested in the game. It will be interesting to see if this platform fighter can regain its momentum from before.
Multiverse will be coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC on May 28.
