Breakdown

  • Overwatch 2 will no longer lock new heroes behind the battle pass
  • Mythic Skins will also be available to purchase in a new Mythic Shop
  • Previous heroes will be unlocked for all players

Blizzard will no longer trap new Overwatch 2 heroes behind a battle pass, bringing more freedom to the controversial PvP multiplayer game. While Overwatch 2 story missions are still dead in the water, this change to the sequel’s infuriating progression system is a much welcome change.

With the arrival of Overwatch 2 Season 10, new heroes will once again be given to all players no matter what, as per a new video update. Starting with Venture, Overwatch 2 heroes will unlock for everyone at the start of a new season.

Alongside this change, past heroes that were locked behind the annoying battle pass structure will become free for everyone. However, new players will still be required to finish the game’s opening first-time user experience to be given access.

This means that Overwatch 2 heroes such as Lifeweaver and Illari will become much more prominent characters in the sandbox. With the heroes an essential part of game balance, giving everyone access to new characters helps to create a healthier game for everyone.

Furthermore, Overwatch 2 mythic skins are finally being made available for purchase outside of the paid battle pass structure. This means that past skins now lost to time are able to be purchased at higher prices for those who missed out. You’ll also now be able to earn Overwatch Coins through the battle pass with a cap of 600 per season.

“The Mythic Shop will allow you to work towards past and current seasonal Mythic hero skins as you progress through the Premium Battle Pass,” Blizzard revealed. “You get to decide how far into each Mythic skin you would like to build. So, for example, if you don’t want to fully unlock all of a skin’s color or model variations, you can spread your progression towards other Mythic hero skins.”

All of this is held together by a host of new content in Overwatch 2 Season 10. Players will be able to play a new game mode dubbed Clash and battle it out in the new map Hanakoa. While these are limited time additions, they will release fully sometime later this year.

Overwatch 2 is available right now as a free to download game on Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.
