Breakdown

  • Midori claims that we're getting Persona 1 and 2 remakes
  • It's not yet clear if these are remakes or remasters
  • Atlus could do both remasters and remakes, just like they did with Persona 3

Persona 1 and 2 might be getting the re-releases they deserve, though it’s unclear if these will be remakes or remasters of the original. Given how Atlus ended up remaking Persona 3 and re-releasing its PSP port, the company could end up doing both for fun.

Midori, a renowned insider for all things SEGA and Atlus, has confirmed that remakes for the first two games are in the works. When a fan asked if these were remakes or remasters, the insider said they would call them “updated” until further notice.

Both Persona 1 and 2 have updated versions on the PSP, which added new cutscenes and altered some of the game’s controversial scenes. Adolf Hitler was in the original version of the second game and was hilariously edited into “Fuhrer” so it would be less controversial.

Considering how Atlus re-released Persona 3 Portable without much improvements, aside from cleaner images, we can see them doing the same for these two games. They could re-release the PSP versions of these two games before giving fans a proper remake, just like this year’s Persona 3 Reload.

It will be interesting to see how fans react to Persona 1 and 2 if they end up getting re-released, as they are vastly different from the modern trilogy. While they do involve high school students, those who were hoping for Social Links and teenage hijinx will be disappointed. These are more like the early Shin Megami Tensei games, though they do have their fair share of fans.

Most fans will agree that the first game is a bit too repetitive and grindy, which is why a remake of this would be very much appreciated. The second entry is much more beloved than the first, with a solid story and some great music that’s still remembered today. Simply put, if Atlus had to remake one of these games, fans would prefer the second one.

Could we get actual remakes of Persona 1 and 2? Or will these simply be remasters that fans will appreciate for video game preservation? We’ll have to wait and see.
