Sony has confirmed that there will be a lack of first-party PlayStation 5 exclusive games from its major franchises for the next year. While new games like Marvel’s Wolverine and the next Uncharted game may be in the works, the next 12 months will be quite bare.
Alongside news that the PS5 is in its last few years of life, Sony explained that its major franchises will not see any new exclusives for at least a year.
In a recent investor’s call, Sony president, COO and CFO Hiroki Totoki explained that the current exclusive lineup will not include any core franchises such as God of War, Horizon, Uncharted, Spider-Man, Ratchet and Clank or more.
“Regarding first-party software, we aim to continue to focus on producing high-quality productions and producing live service games,” Totoki explained. “But while major projects are currently under development, we do not plan to release any new major existing franchise titles next fiscal year like God of War: Ragnarok and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
However, the PlayStation 5 will not be without exclusives for the entire year. Later this month, the console will be the only platform gamers will be able to experience Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Furthermore, the sexually-charged hack-and-slash Stellar Blade releases exclusively on PS5 which is bound to excite some fans. (Even if it looks like a game lost in 2007.)
After years of remasters, sequels and remakes, it seems that Sony is finally experimenting with new IP such as the intriguing Rise of the Ronin. However, after that game releases in April, the PS5’s exclusive release calendar does seem quite sparse.
Nevertheless, Sony’s exclusive lineup has been rather strong for the past few years and there’s still a lot of exclusives that fans can catch up on. (It’s time to give Sackboy a go, guys. Come on.)
At the time of writing, multiple exclusives are in development outside of the 2024 release cycle. Insomniac’s hugely-leaked Wolverine game is currently pegged for 2025 with a Spider-Man 3 game planned afterwards. Furthermore, a God of War: Ragnarok sequel is in the works at Sony Santa Monica, finishing up Kratos’ revived trilogy.
