Breakdown

  • SEGA is reportedly working on a Sonic Heroes remake
  • Reliable insider Midori has confirmed the report
  • The remake will reportedly be made with UE5 and is coming out next year

Rumour has it that SEGA is working on a Sonic Heroes remake, finally bringing the fan-favorite 2003 game to modern systems. The news comes at an interesting week for Sonic fans, as a Fall Guys-style battle royale called Sonic Toys Party was also leaked.

Necro from UnivNintendo reported on the remake, which was later confirmed by reliable insider Midori, who has a habit of correctly leaking SEGA and Atlus games. While fans should take the word of insiders with a grain of salt, Midori did correctly leak the Persona 3 Reload DLC, so they are very reliable.

If everything reported by these insiders is true, the Sonic Heroes remake is going to come out next year and run on Unreal Engine 5. Obviously, SEGA will give the final word on whether this remake is true or not, but it should get the interest of Sonic fans no matter what happens.

For those who didn’t grow up in the PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube era, Sonic Heroes was a fairly unique 3D Sonic game, even by today’s standards. Players can choose a three-person team and switch between each character anytime during gameplay, usually when their abilities are needed. A three-person team usually has a speedster (Sonic), a flyer (Tails), and a powerhouse (Knuckles), with each one handling obstacles made for their abilities.

Heroes was notable for having multiple teams to choose from, including Team Amy, Team Shadow, and Team Chaotix. This is easily the biggest roster of playable Sonic characters, even if they all play similarly due to the character types.

Considering how unique this game was for its time, it will be interesting to see if SEGA implements any of the features seen in Sonic Frontiers or the upcoming Sonic X Shadow Generations. As it stands, all we can do is wait for SEGA to officially announce the remake and see if it actually exists.

Sonic Heroes is rumoured to get a remake in 2025. Meanwhile, fans are still waiting for Sonic X Shadows Generations to come out this Fall for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
