Silent Hill 2 Remake’s awful trailer was all Konami’s fault, say devs

Revealed alongside new trailers for the Until Dawn Remake and a new look at the hilariously 2007-esque Stellar Blade, Sony’s recent State of Play event gave us a brand-new look at Silent Hill 2 Remake. It was atrocious.

While hopes have not been high for Bloober Team’s (developer of The Medium) take on the iconic horror game, the title’s recent Silent Hill 2 Combat Trailer dragged its hype down into the mud.

While the game looked visually decent, the recent trailer showed off some rather dreadful looking fun play. Silent Hill 2 has never been known as a game with great combat, but it’s clunkiness can be forgiven as a title that often has you running away from enemies. In this latest trailer, janky gunplay and poor enemy animations were advertised as the core of the new remake.

In a TV interview transcribed by Eurogamer Poland, Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno explained that the recent trailer wasn’t made by the developers and “does not refresh the spirit of the game”. Instead, the recent trailer was handled entirely by Konami and uses an unfinished version of the horror game.

“It's quite serious that we are not responsible for the marketing,” Babieno said. “Our partner [Konami] is entirely responsible for this. Certainly this trailer does not reflect the spirit of the game.”

The CEO explained that fans have yet to see “real gameplay” of Silent Hill 2 Remake. While the recent gameplay has been spruced up by a marketing department, it’s more akin to seeing unfinished leaks of Insomnaic’s Wolverine than the finished product.

“We try to fully convey this romantic vision of the game that debuted 22 years ago. It seems to us that when players see real gameplay, a real game - they will evaluate it in a completely different way,” the Bloober Team CEO explained.

There is still no Silent Hill 2 release date at the time of writing. However, fans can try out the series’ latest entry for free on PlayStation 5 - Silent Hill: The Short Message. It’s essentially a poor man’s P.T. but it’s still worth giving a shot.

When Silent Hill 2 Remake does eventually release, it’ll be exclusive to PlayStation 5 and PC. With Sony confirming a lack of PS5 exclusives this year, we should expect to see the remake sometime in 2025.
