Breakdown
- Sonic Superstars is still getting odd DLC, including IHOP exclusive content
- The IHOP DLC gives Amy a new dress to run around in
- Expect more oddball DLC like this in the future
Sonic Superstars has announced exclusive IHOP DLC and this is somehow not a late April Fool’s joke, despite how silly this sounds. We’ve seen video games have weird DLC deals like this before, but to do it with a game that’s not exactly relevant is quite the head scratcher.
On Twitter, users like UltimaShadowX are confused by this DLC becoming a reality, especially since it’s limited to US users. Fans will need to eat $10 worth of IHOP food to get an exclusive costume for Amy, which sure is a DLC costume that exists.
At the least, the Sonic Superstars DLC is available for all three consoles, so fans will have to choose if they want the PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch versions. Unfortunately, there is no code for the Steam or Epic Games version, so PC players are left in the dust when it comes to this DLC.
This isn’t the first time SEGA has made an odd DLC partnership for this Sonic game. LEGO skins for the cast were recently released, with fans getting LEGO Sonic for free while Amy, Knuckles, and Tails had their LEGO forms behind a paywall. Other odd partnerships have also made the rounds, like a Kroger rewards program having exclusive comic-style skins.
It’s interesting to see Sonic Superstars get continued support from SEGA, especially since the company will be releasing Sonic X Shadow Generations this year. As part of the announcement, a free Shadow costume for Sonic was released for Superstars, though fans were unimpressed.
Compared to similar games like Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Sonic Superstars was a fine enough platformer players could enjoy. While the game does suffer from a number of issues, like overly long boss fights and some annoying bugs, there are a section of fans who enjoy the game.
Sonic Superstars is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Sonic X Shadow Generations will be launching later this year for the same systems.
