Suicide Squad: Killed the Justice League was a massive failure for Warner Bros. and a new detailed report has given us how that came to be. As many can assume, a major part of the game’s failure was due to Warner Bros. chasing the dated live-service trend and the devs couldn’t change their minds.
Jason Schreier’s expansive report on Bloomberg reveals that numerous developers had expressed their criticism to Rocksteady, but they were often shut down by toxic positivity. Warner Bros. and Rocksteady would repeatedly tell developers that their game would pull through at the last minute like their Batman: Arkham games.
It seems that the publishers were convinced that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League would become a billion dollar franchise, which is laughable in hindsight. What makes this even more interesting is that this wasn’t originally going to be a DC game. Apparently, this was supposed to be an original IP going by the codename Stones, but the DC IP was added in to drive up sales.
While players are frustrated with the final product, the devs were even more frustrated making it. Many of the devs were new hirees who thought they would be working on single-player games like the Batman: Arkham series. Once it was made clear that they were going to work on this live-service title, many devs quit the project.
Rocksteady is aware of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s failure, as they attempt to pivot away from this and start anew. The report claims that Rocksteady are pitching a single-player title that can bring back the studio’s credibility. It was also claimed that some of the devs are working on a “Director’s Cut” of Hogwarts Legacy, which makes the game’s recent free content update more interesting.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League won’t be getting as much post-launch support as expected, due to the game’s massive commercial failure. The game isn’t complete trash, but it’s clear that most players are done with live-service titles and they crave something more interesting. Hopefully, Rocksteady’s next game can deliver on that.
