Breakdown
- Crystal Dynamics censored some spicy Lara Croft posters in Tomb Raider Remastered
- The company previously promised not to censor any of the original material, including racist caricatures
- It's not yet known if these sexy posters will be patched back
Crystal Dynamics have gone back on their word and censored some spicy pics of Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider Remastered collection. It’s an odd decision to make since no one complained about them before, as the devs promised to keep all the weird and problematic elements from the original releases.
First noticed by fans on the game’s subreddit before bleeding its way into social media, the most recent update has removed some provocative posters of Lara from the game. While it might be weird to complain about pixelated smut getting removed, these posters were originally ads for the game and are part of the character’s history.
At the least, this doesn’t affect gameplay and those enjoying Tomb Raider Remastered can continue to do so without issue. Still, removing these posters felt unnecessary, as the character’s sexiness has always been a major selling point that many accepted. Plus, if they’re going to censor these posters they might as well remove the racism in this game.
Like we previously mentioned, Crystal Dynamics acknowledged that these original games have problematic caricatures that Lara has to shoot down. While the devs acknowledged these were stupid, they felt preserving it should have been done so no one forgets how backward-thinking everyone used to be.
It’s not yet known if these posters will eventually be patched back in Tomb Raider Remastered, though we doubt that’s going to happen. Granted, it’s an easy enough thing to patch back and players would be thankful for it, but this feels like a mandate that was made for no reason. Normally, talks of “censorship” tend to come from horny trolls who have never talked to women, but this is an actual case of annoying censorship.
We know Crystal Dynamics is working on a new era of Tomb Raider, but it’s doubtful that this censoring is a part of their creative plans. They did reveal what she would look like and it was the same confident version of Lara fans fell in love with.
The Tomb Raider Remastered collection is readily available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
