Breakdown

  • Ubisoft leaked the Assassin's Creed Shadows release date, set for November 15
  • The date was discovered by a user via the upcoming cinematic trailer YouTube video's description set to premiere on May 15
  • Shadows was originally unveiled as Codename Red in 2022

Soon after Ubisoft officially revealed Assassin's Creed Shadows, previously known as Codename Red, the developers accidentally revealed the release date, set for November 15.

The leak emerged through the upcoming YouTube cinematic world premiere trailer, set to debut on May 15. It appears that Ubisoft overlooked the fact that users could view the descriptions of upcoming YouTube premieres before the videos launch.

A user quickly noticed this oversight and shared it on social media, prompting Twitter personality Wario64 to signal boost the leak.

Many players, including those who are not necessarily fans of the Assassin's Creed franchise, have long dreamed of an instalment set in feudal Japan. Recent titles such as Ghost of Tsushima, Rise of the Ronin, and Nioh have demonstrated a clear interest in this setting, making it the perfect time for Ubisoft to pull the trigger on the concept.

Even smaller studios like RGG have taken advantage of this newfound craze for games set in feudal Japan, with the remaster of Like a Dragon: Ishin, a niche Like a Dragon (formerly Yakuza) spin-off being brought to the west in 2023, nine years after it originally launched.

To truly know what Ubisoft has in store for the setting, we'll have to wait for the cinematic trailer. However, it looks promising so far, and it appears that players will be able to fulfil their fantasies of taking control of shinobi (or ninjas, as they are more commonly known).

Hopefully, the developers don't try to rush this one out to meet an arbitrary deadline. Ubisoft has learned its lessons in the past focusing on quality over quantity soon after the yearly AC releases ended up blowing up in their faces.

It's true that AC Mirage was released last year, but that title was much smaller in scale compared to other mainline entries, with the latest fully-fledged Assassin's Creed being Valhalla, released in 2020.

As mentioned, Assassin's Creed Shadows is set to release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S this November 15. We recommend you check out our guide with full details about its launch as we'll be updating it constantly.
