If you can't wait any longer for the likes of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls or 2XKO, then fanmade Ultimate Sonic Smackdown is right up your alley. It's a free-to-play fan project that pits the likes of Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles, and more in 3v3 tag action.
The project has been in development for a while. It is completely made without any intent of becoming a profitable endeavor in order to avoid any potential legal issues with SEGA.
Ultimate Sonic Smackdown's trailer does a really good job of showcasing the amount of love the developers poured into the game. All of the characters have plenty of moves that reference the original games.
The game even features tracks from Sonic games, with Crush 40 sounding throughout the trailer.

You can go to the official Ultimate Sonic Smackdown download page and get it from there. Remember that any other version is not officially supported by the developers.

There are a total of five playable characters. These are:
- Sonic The Hedgehog
- Knuckles The Echidna
- Shadow The Hedgehog
- Doctor Eggman
- Mecha Sonic
It might not be a big roster, but there's potential for more characters to be added in the future. The likes of Rogue, Amy Rose, and even Big The Cat (yes I said it) could make fine additions to the roster.
Now it's the best time to jump into fighting games. With the likes of Street Fighter 6 still going strong, new exciting projects like Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, and the many upcoming tag fighters, having a free-to-play passion project like Ultimate Sonic Smackdown is a net positive for the genre.
