The Legend of Zelda’s Master Sword is one of the most iconic video game weapons in history, which is why we see so much merch for it. Unfortunately, one man found out the hard way that Master Sword merchandise can still be used as a weapon, hence, his arrest.
According to the Warwickshire Police (via Wario64), British citizen Anthony Bray has been arrested and will spend four months in jail for the Master Sword replica. Bray did try to defend himself, claiming that the weapon was merely a fidget toy due to its size, but it was still sharp enough to be used for stabbing.
Interestingly enough, the police pointed out that Bray could have avoided contact with them entirely if he didn’t bring it out the Zelda toy so much. Based on the reports, it seems that Bray brought out this “fidget” a lot, which is probably why so many people noticed how sharped this toy is.
“We take a zero tolerance to bladed articles in public, and Bray has fallen afoul of this. It is possible to find fidget toys that aren’t six-inch blades. It is possible not to walk down the street holding them out in front of you,” said Sgt Spellman of the Patrol Investigations Unit. “With a bit more self-awareness, Bray could have avoided contact with us completely.”
Merchandise like this isn’t exclusive to Zelda, as there are plenty of gamers with replica weapons from Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, or Halo. Owning or buying them is far from a bad thing, but bringing them out like a weapon will get people talking. Hopefully, Bray’s time in prison will make him more secretive about his hobbies, or at the least, gives him more tact.
Fans who want to get the Master Sword through Link can pick up The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom now on Nintendo Switch. The upcoming Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom looks to change things, by having Zelda be the protagonist for once with no Master Sword in sight.
