PlayStation 5 has reached another milestone, as Sony confirms its latest console has now sold 17.3 million units by December 2021. Announced in Sony's latest earnings report, PS5 has now become the second fastest selling PlayStation console, behind the PS4.
For comparison, the PS4 sold 20.4 million in the same timeframe. However, it's not the fairest comparison since PS5 consoles have been in shorter supply, thanks to a global chipset shortage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
PS5 Has Sold 17.3 Million Units
Sony previous forecast 22.6 million units being sold by March of this year, though they've to cut this down by 2 million due to ongoing supply issues, and 19.6 million units is the new target. It's worth noting too that the 17.3 million record means they've outsold the Wii U's lifetime sales, which sold 13.56 million by December 31, 2019.
Other news from Sony's earning call includes the announcement its looking to publish ten live service games by March 2026. That also follows the company's acquisition of Bungie earlier this week, priced at $3.6 billion. Make sure to follow us for more gaming news and updates as it happens.
