The PlayStation is possibly one of the most iconic video game consoles ever. It was the first platform on which all legendary gaming titles were developed.
From Resident Evil and Silent Hill to Tekken and Xenogears, Sony's classic gray console has become a standard device in almost every gaming household.
Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, the PlayStation and its original audience has come a long way. With life happening in between, no one can deny how nostalgic it feels to hear the deep, resonant hum followed by the sparkling chime of the PlayStation's start-up audio.
It's like an audible teleportation device that instantly brings you back to those golden years of gaming.
Nostalgia is a powerful tool, and Sony knows that. That's why, for PlayStation's 30th anniversary, every single PS5 and PS5 Pro can now be customized to have the original PlayStation start-up sound thanks to a feature update.
If you are excited to hear the magical start-up sound of the PlayStation and travel back to the Christmastime of your childhood, here's how to customize your console dashboard and get the Anniversary Classic PlayStation start-up on PS5.
Look for the Feature Update Notification
Before customizing your PS5 start-up, you should receive a notification on your console that you have a feature update ready to be installed.
When you restart your PS5, you'll notice that the start-up sound has been switched to that of the anniversary Classic PlayStation start-up.
Take a few seconds to feel the rush of nostalgia (yes, we want you to enjoy the moment), and get ready to customize your PS5 Home Screen.
Choose Your Favorite PlayStation Console
Once you log back into your PlayStation profile, you'll see a few new notifications about the latest update.
You will then have the option to customize your Home Screen based on your favorite PlayStation consoles, including PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4.
Go to Settings, and you'll see the Appearance and Sound option. You can switch to any of the available Anniversary themes for a limited time by choosing the consoles from the drop-down menu.
Choose your preferred console, and voilà, your PS5 now shows custom themes from the PlayStation 30th Anniversary.
2024 has been a rough year in gaming, but little things like this nostalgic theme from Sony somehow make the year a tad better. We hope 2025 will be a stronger year, with massive titles such as Monster Hunter Wilds and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater on the way.
Sony's very own Astro Bot is also in the running for The Game Awards' Game of The Year award. Considering Astro Bot has gained universal acclaim, Sony might have another reason to celebrate its 30th anniversary further.
