Alongside numerous world premieres during The Game Awards 2021's ceremony last night, Krafton revealed that PUBG: Battlegrounds is moving towards a free-to-play model, beginning early next year.
Going free-to-play on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, this popular battle royale game makes that transition on January 12th, 2022. Since launching through early access back in 2017, it's always been a paid game, marking the first time it'll go free for those platforms.

PUBG: Battlegrounds Goes Free-To-Play Next Year
Unsurprisingly, there'll still be paid elements for it. Free players require an "account upgrade" called Battlegrounds Plus to unlock the PUBG's ranked mode and custom match modes, alongisde numerous special items. That's priced at $12.99.
As for The Game Awards 2021, It Takes Two notched the game of the year award, besting Deathloop, Metroid Dread, and Resident Evil Village. Surprise reveals were also there for Star Wars: Eclipse, Star Trek Resurgence, a Final Fantasy 7 Remake PC port, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax's re-release, and more.
