Spider-Man: No Way Home brought back several characters from the superhero's 20-year reign of films, though even more could've shown up.
The sequel's screenwriters, Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna spoke to Variety about the film's production process. They mentioned that there were plans to rejuvenate several of the Webhead's legacy characters in Spidey's third solo MCU outing.

Spider-Man No Way Home Was Going To Bring Back More Characters
McKenna and Sommers approached No Way Home's initial screenplay by exploring all of the possible appearances for the hero's alumni of stars.
Let’s write the script that is the kitchen sink and we’ll just act like we were going to get everything we wish for.

Kirsten Dunst and Rosemary Harris were absent from the final product, while Emma Stone and Sally Field also didn't make any appearances. This is because the duo realised that there was no legitimate reason to reunite these figures, especially within the context of No Way Home's story:
We went down different roads with different characters that just didn’t fit. We can’t get into the details of that because it might be the kind of thing where they’ll find a way to explore those ideas. So I’d hate to spoil anything, because I think we had a lot of fun.

It would've been great seeing these characters return, acting as nice surprises for Spidey fans. Though, it's clear that their appearances wouldn't have made sense within the premise of the sequel, possibly detracting from the focus of Peter Parker's story.
Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to break fascinate fans around the world, with the superhero phenomenon amassing $1 billion worldwide. The film also remembers its Friendly Neighbourhood beginnings, with a subtle Stan Lee easter egg making the cut.
