Discussions of the 46-year-old star's reprisal began with a meeting between him and producer, Amy Pascal along with MCU chief, Kevin Fiege.

I went and had a meeting with Amy and Kevin. Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige. And had talked about… They sort of just teased it. I think Amy was like, 'We'd love to talk to you, and you you know what this is about.' And I was like 'okay, sure. Let's go chat.'

Though the star has mainly produced films and TV shows over the last few years, the actor was determined to bring his character back. Recognising the love fans share for the Raimi trilogy, the actor was "intrigued immediately":

I gotta say, I was intrigued immediately. In that conversation, the intention, the kind of love and celebration of these movies, and what it meant I think to Amy and Kevin was apparent. To me, when artists or people who are um steering the creative process have a kind of authentic, genuine intent of celebration and love, it just was so apparent in both of them that I just wanted to join that.

Spider-Man: No Way Home marks Maguire's first role in four years and 14 years since his last appearance as Peter Parker. With this gap, the actor mentions that bringing his iteration back was somewhat challenging.

I'm a big fan of Tom and those movies and Andrew. So, it was definitely intriguing. But, yes, I was also going, 'Well, what are we going to do?' And that was a bit mysterious. I did appreciate what was shared.

His return to the suit also harkened back to personal memories he experienced while under the mask:

It was really about getting together with these people and revisiting what was part of my history and getting a chance to like come together. There are personal things too, which are kind of resolutions or a way to revisit and… I'm not quite sure how to put it. It was uncomfortable getting it on and then it's a goof, and then it also has a sort of power in a sense because it brings me back into that character.

Maguire's on his way to an acting resurgence with a new TV Show, Extrapolations, and La La Land director's next film, Babylon both set for this year. No Way Home might not be the end for Maguire's Spider-Man, as a new report claims he'll reunite with Sam Raimi for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
