Publisher Bethesda has taken the difficult decision to delay the releases of two of its most heavily anticipated upcoming titles, Starfield and Redfall, to the first half of 2023.

The announcement of the delays to both the interstellar RPG and the co-op FPS was made via Bethesda’s official Twitter account.

“The teams at Arkane Austin (Redfall) and Bethesda Game Studios (Starfield) have incredible ambitions for their games,” read the announcement, adding: “and we want to ensure that you receive the best, most polished versions of them.”

The announcement also thanked players for the excitement and enthusiasm regarding both games, saying: “That energy is a huge part of what inspires all of us every day and drives our own excitement for what we are creating.”

It then hinted that the fans may still be treated to in-depth looks at the gameplay of both titles in the near future, before concluding by thanking players for their support once again.

Redfall’s development team, Arkane Studios Austin, also released their own statement in response to the announcement, explaining: “The team needs more time to bring the game to life” and adding: “Redfall is our most ambitious game yet, and we can’t wait to show it off soon.”

Reaction to the news across social media varied, with expressions of frustration being heavily interlaced with players stating their willingness to accept delays, provided that the finished product is of a good standard, essentially avoiding a repeat of the issues experienced by CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077.

Many also pointed out that the delays make Xbox’s first-party game offerings for 2022 look particularly slim as of right now.

Starfield, Bethesda’s first original RPG in 25 years, has been in some form of development since 2013 when its name was trademarked by the company.
