Street Fighter V may have grown into one of the most complete fighters available today, but fans will undoubtedly be looking towards Street Fighter 6, the next instalment.

After all, the game did launch in early 2016, and while seasonal content has added plenty of characters, it's time for something new. A recent leak has shed plenty of light on a new title in the franchise, so here's everything you need to know about Street Fighter 6. We know the game is real now, we're just waiting for more details on what to expect from it.

Street Fighter 6 release date

Street Fighter 6 is due to release on June 2, 2023. That's the current line from Capcom, so there's still a little while to wait.

Many had expected the game to launch in 2021 after it was confirmed that the Capcom Cup 2020 champion wouldn't automatically qualify for the 2021 competition. This was shot down somewhat by prolific Capcom leaker Dusk Golem (see below).

Later tweets suggested that Capcom's corporate officer, Midori Yuasa, is now leading the project, taking over from producer Yoshinori Ono. IGN shared verified the leaks, with a schedule showing that Street Fighter 6 is expected in Q3 of 2022, with a Super Street Fighter 6 version following in Q4 2023.

Finally, it looks like an Ultra Street Fighter 6 version is expected in Q4 2024. IGN does note that while sources confirmed the game is in development, this timeline could be out of date. Given the more recent release date news, it seems like those leaks aren't completely right.

A new trailer for Street Fighter 6 debuted at the recent PlayStation State of Play presentation. As well as showing off new gameplay and reiterating the game's colourful aesthetic, we also learnt about two new modes, World Tour and Battle Hub. The former is a fleshed-out story mode, while the latter is an open hub world where you can encounter other players to fight, akin to MyPark in the NBA 2K series.

That's on top of conformation that Ryu, Chun-Li, and Luke all return, alongside a new character called Jamie. His fighting style is based on 'drunken boxing,' as he sips an energy drink before unleashing his special move.

The footage also confirmed a new control scheme designed to simplify special moves, making them more accessible to new players. Combined with a real-time commentary system design to help newcomers understand the mechanics at play, Street Fighter 6 is both faithful to its roots, while also welcoming new players with open arms. You can check out the new footage below.

If you're looking for a great opinion piece on Street Fighter 6, we highly recommend spending five minutes with this latest feature from VG247's Alex Donaldson. Notably, the piece looks at how Capcom must get Street Fighter 6 right, and not just for the sake of the series’ 35th anniversary which is also coming in 2022.

Platforms

A new email surfaced in the big Capcom leak suggests that not only is the game allegedly coming to PC and PS5, but also Xbox Series S and Series X, too. Other platforms listed are PS4 and Xbox One, suggesting a cross-generation release.

Street Fighter 5 was previously not available on Xbox consoles, but with Microsoft's growing user base it stands to reason that Capcom's next title in the series is a multi-platform release. Only time will tell.

Street Fighter 6 characters

Street Fighter 5 launched with 16 characters, but following five different seasons of content, actually reached more than 40.

Whether all of those characters would make the jump to Street Fighter 6 is anyone's guess, but it's fair to assume that usual suspects like Ryu, Chun-Li, Dhalsim, Ken and M. Bison will make the jump.

There's also Luke, Street Fighter V's final DLC character for Season 5 that released on November 29th. Notably, Capcom called him "a glimpse into the future" and during the Fall Update video below, Capcom advised, "we'll be back with more news about the future of Street Fighter". Hopefully, we'll hear more soon.
