Super Smash Bros. Ultimate might be the most ambitious crossover in gaming history but it couldn’t add all of your favorite characters.

While they did finally add Ridley, Simon Belmont, Banjo & Kazooie, among others, there were some that couldn’t make the cut like Shantae or Rayman.

How Many Spirits Does Smash Ultimate Have?

Though those characters don’t appear in the game as playable fighters (or even assist trophies), there is one way for them to make an appearance...sort of?

One of the new features in Smash Ultimate that ties into World of Light are Spirits, which are used as power-ups for some of the game’s more fun and frustrating challenges.

There are also 1,200 of them, which is quite a lot.

They can be equipped on either World of Light or some of the Spirit Board missions and you can even win some new ones based on a game’s theme.

Everything from Bravely Default II, Persona 5, and even Pokemon get some form of representation here, albeit in image form and little else.

Admittedly, some of these Smash Ultimate spirits have fun tidbits that pay homage to the game they’re from.

For example, equipping the Spirit of Paz from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes immediately gives players a bomb power-up, which is a dark nod if you’re familiar with what happens to that character.

Masahiro Sakurai sure has a grim sense of humor sometimes, but that kind of attention to detail is appreciated.

While some of that is cool, you really shouldn’t try to get all 1,200 Smash Ultimate Spirits since you will be wasting a considerable amount of time doing that.

At the least, don’t do it in one go and maybe take these challenges with breaks in-between, which is what handheld gaming is perfect for.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is now available for the Nintendo Switch, with some Spirits being freebies for Nintendo Online users.
