The original PSVR headset is now five years old, but with the release of a new generation of consoles last year, a big question concerns whether the PSVR runs better on PS5.
Here's everything you need to know on the subject plus a handy guide on how to get started and what to look for in the future.
Does PSVR Run Better On PS5?
In short, the PSVR doesn't run any better on PS5 in terms of graphical performance at least. Despite the uprated power of the PS5 compared to its predecessor, none of it is necessarily put to much use with the original PSVR headset, as it offers the same experience as the PS4 Pro.
However, there is one thing that is better than with the PS4 - load times. This is thanks to the powerful M.2 SSD on the PS5 which Sony say offers 2.5x better memory bandwidth than the PS4 Pro, which in turn cuts loading times in half.
How To Get PSVR To Work With PS5
If you are wanting to try out your PSVR headset on your PS5, then it's a relatively easy process. Firstly, you'll need to pick up the PlayStation Camera adaptor from Sony's official website.
They're currently offering it for free if you provide your PSVR's serial number and shipping details and it's limited to one per household. Alongside this, you'll also need the PlayStation Camera for PS4. Sony's newer HD Camera for PS5, unfortunately, doesn't support VR tracking.
Once you've got all those pieces together, it's as easy as plugging the relevant cables into the relevant slots on the PSVR's black box. That is, connecting the camera adaptor to the camera on one end and a spare USB port on your PS5.
Then, comes one HDMI out from the PSVR's black box to the PS5, alongside another HDMI cable from the PSVR to your TV, and a final USB from the black box to the PS5.
Once this is sorted, then it's a simple case of turning everything on, running the setup procedure on the console and you should be good to go.
Should You Wait For The PSVR 2?
The PSVR 2 has been confirmed by Sony as being the next generation of the company's VR headsets, which is being engineered specifically for PS5.
Whilst the PSVR 2 release date hasn't currently been announced, Bloomberg has reported Sony is anticipating a release for the 2022 holiday season, according to insiders.
It should be a headset that should harness the power of the PS5 more so than the current generation does, and so if you are looking for the best VR experience possible on your new console, then we'd say it'll be worth the wait.
However, if you do want to try out some PSVR action in the meantime, then picking up the original headset won't go amiss at all.
