Project Cambria Specs: What To Expect, Rumors, And more

share to other networks share to twitter share to facebook

Project Cambria was one of the big highlights of Facebook Connect, but we're all left with a number of questions that need answering, namely what to expect when it comes to its specs.

Touted as a 'higher-end' experience in the world of VR, and said not to be the Oculus Quest 3, we're assuming that the new device is going to be a bit of a showstopper when it releases.

Here we'll take a look at everything we know so far as we uncover the mystery behind what could be the 'next-gen' of VR headsets.

Project Cambria Specs

Asides from a small teaser trailer, the in-depth specs of Project Cambria are still unknown, however, there are some details to get excited about.

Project Cambria Resolution

While we don't know the resolution per eye, we can assume that it will be one of the 'best in class', especially since it's already being labelled as a higher end option.

How it will face up to the potential Oculus Quest 3's resolution will be interesting to see, however, it sounds like the two will be very different beasts in the VR space.

If it's any indication, Sony's recent unveiling of a prototype 8K VR headset could give us an indication of future display tech thanks to its two 4K OLED microdisplays that offer an overall sharper image.

If Project Cambria is to be a high-end headset, then utilising a similar system would put it along the right lines.

Project Cambria AR

We do know that Project Cambria will apparently feature full-colour, high-resolution video passthrough

That means this isn't just a VR headset...it's also AR, much like Apple's own AR Headset that is touted to have the same features, alongside being a powerful, all-in-one device itself.

This opens up a whole new world of possibilities (many of which may have been leaked ahead of Facebook Connect).

It could place Project Cambria against Qualcomm's Snapdragon Spaces tech, signalling the possibility of further development and competition within the AR space, alongside concurrent innovation within VR.

Project Cambria Face and Eye Tracking

Project Cambria is said to feature additional sensors that should monitor your face movements closely and be able to recreate different avatars, some of which could be incredibly realistic.

This face and eye tracking will be a step up from the Oculus Quest 2 and could have a huge impact on how we communicate online.

Project Cambria Lenses

One of the big changes we're going to see in Project Cambria is the use of pancake lenses.

As the name suggests, these lenses are thinner than what we've seen in the likes of the Oculus Quest 2, and should be able to create a much more slimline VR headset.

Not only do we think this will reduce the bulkiness of the device, but we think it will do well for the overall weight of it too.
