The PSVR 2 has been officially confirmed by Sony, but one thing that hasn't is if the PSVR 2 will be a backwards-compatible headset.
There isn't all too much information on the headset is also, so it makes sense to look forward to any exciting new announcements, including its release date, which we still don't know all too much about.
Here's what we think about whether the PSVR 2 will be backwards compatible.
Will PSVR 2 Be Backwards Compatible?
In short, we don't necessarily know if the PSVR 2 is going to be backwards compatible or not. As official news surrounding its feature set is pretty scant, it's understandable as to why.
A recent rumour from reputable tipster TheNexus however suggests that PSVR 2 will be backwards compatible with original PSVR games.
This also makes sense given that Sony is beginning to offer PSVR games in its monthly PS Plus lineups as the original PSVR is fully compatible with PS5.
For instance, November 2021's sect of games included Until You Fall and The Persistence, as it had been five years since the launch of the original PSVR.
How Does PSVR Work With PS5?
It is also worth noting that there is already a kind of backwards compatibility going on with the marriage between Sony's original console VR headset and its flagship console, the PS5.
In reading the small print on Sony's website, it reveals that you can use the PSVR with PS5, but you just need to purchase the PlayStation Camera adaptor and a PlayStation Camera for PS4 to do so.
Will PSVR 2 Be Wireless?
If you're going to have a backwards compatible headset, then it would also be nice to have a wireless one too.
Much like the news on backwards compatibility though, it is still up in the air as to whether PSVR 2 will be fully wireless.
Sony has said it'll connect to the PS5 via a single cord, which is a marked improvement over its predecessor, but opting for no cables would be even better.
They recently unveiled the PSVR 2's design, revealing the single cable setup, which means, it doesn't look like the headset will be wireless after all.
It would be nice to think that it could be wireless, given other modern VR headsets like the Oculus Quest 2 don't need a PC to work, and also feature a vast games library built-in to the system.
