The world of virtual reality has been a pretty big deal for the last few years and knowing exactly what VR gaming is actually easier than you might think.

Here's everything you need to know on the matter, plus some handy advice on what to look for in a VR headset.

What is VR Gaming?

In short, VR gaming refers to the notion of a gaming experience within virtual reality. This involves putting on a headset that allows users to truly immerse themselves within a wide selection of games and fantasy worlds.

In the context of the gaming sphere, it is a relatively modern innovation, having been executed properly within the last decade on some brilliant VR headsets from manufacturers like Oculus and HTC.

That isn't to say VR has existed beforehand though. It has, although in more specialist terms, with the likes of NASA utilising it within the late 1970s and early 1980s. It didn't arrive in the world of mainstream gaming until arguably the launch of Nintendo's VirtualBoy in 1995.

What Is VR Mostly Used For?

Virtual reality is mainly utilised in the entertainment space, especially within gaming on headsets like the Oculus Quest 2 and PSVR, but it is also being applied to other contexts such as the metaverse, or an entire digital world that's populated with user-created avatars that can interact.

On the front of gaming though, there are expected to be more exciting and powerful headsets coming in the future like the PSVR 2, the Meta Quest Pro and the hotly-anticipated Oculus Quest 3 that should be able to take the VR game to the next level.

Should I Buy A VR Headset?

If you're wanting to try out the world of VR for yourself, investing in a more affordable headset like the Oculus Quest 2 wouldn't go amiss for instance, as it features a huge games library and you don't need a PC in order to get started.

Or if you've got a PS4 or PS4 Pro knocking around and want to give VR a go on your respective console, then Sony's own PSVR headset will suit you best. It's also compatible with PS5, so if you've got the latest generation of Sony's consoles, you won't be missing out on what is an affordable virtual reality experience.
