If you'd like to know if the Meta Quest 3 will need a PC to work, then you're in the right place.
Here's what we think on the matter, plus some other details on what the spec sheet could also include, and whether it's worth waiting for the Quest 3 entirely.
Will Meta Quest 3 need a PC?
In short, we don't know. Details on the Meta Quest 3's specs are scant as things stand more generally, and one of the key things we're unsure of is if the potentially upcoming headset will need a PC to work.
It may be a safe assumption to state you won't, especially given you don't need a PC to use the Oculus Quest 2 and it would make sense for the same tech to be implemented in the Quest 3 to offer the same untethered experience.
There would be nothing stopping Meta from also allowing the headset to be compatible with a PC like the previous generation and using it to play SteamVR games for instance. This would open up a wider array of games that can be played on the headset alongside what it can play natively.
Could Meta Quest 3 Have Expandable Storage?
If you won't need a PC to use the Meta Quest 3, then it may make sense for it to have user-expandable storage via the means of a microSD card slot on the headset.
The Oculus Quest 2 doesn't have any form of expandable memory, unfortunately, so you're left with either 128GB or 256GB of hard drive space dependent upon the model you purchase, which will still be good for storing a fair few games.
If the Meta Quest 3 did have expandable storage, this would allow for even more games and apps to be loaded on besides what the system storage can take. Also, if games get more detailed for the Quest 3, they'll have bigger file sizes, so then more storage will be of paramount importance.
Should I Wait For Meta Quest 3?
If you want to give the next generation of Quest headsets a go, then going for the Meta Quest 3 when it releases would be a good choice, especially if the Quest 2 is anything to go by.
Investing in one when the release date does roll around could be handy if its spec sheet is beefier than the Quest 2, and it should be by rights, certainly, if you won't need a PC to use it and if it has expandable storage. It could also be the case that the Quest 3 has proper Bluetooth support.
The release date for the Quest 3 could be some way off though and the general consensus could be that we see the headset drop in either 2022 or 2023.
For context, the last Quest headset was released in October 2020, and the previous one in 2019, and it may be the case that Meta is taking their time to get things exactly right.
For the time being, therefore, the Quest 2, with its ever-expanding games library, a raft of accessories and its affordable price point, still looks to be a marvellous choice, though.
