Henry Cavill may have lost Superman and The Witcher, two IPs he seemed passionate about, but he is attached to an upcoming adaptation of Warhammer 40,000 with Amazon.

It’s been a while since there’s been an update on that project, but it looks like the show is finally moving forward.

Amazon’s Warhammer Series with Henry Cavill

According to a report from Deadline, the Warhammer 40K series is now officially in development at Amazon Studios, and Cavill will executive produce and star. No showrunner has been locked down yet, but a writers’ room has been assembled to determine the franchise's future direction if it adapts.

Amazon had originally acquired the rights in December 2022 but sat on the property long before they started anything. The owner of the Warhammer IP, Games Workshop, was said to have given Amazon a deadline to decide what to do with the property until this year—and it looks like they finally decided.

Cavill talked about the development on his IG:

“My incredible team and I, alongside the brilliant minds at Games Workshop, have been working away in concept rooms, breaking down approaches to the enormity and magnificence of the Warhammer world. Together, we've been sifting through the plethora of incredible characters and poring over old tomes and texts. Our combined efforts have led us to a fantastic place to start our Universe, which has been agreed upon by those up on high at both Amazon and Games Workshop.”

“Burn the Heretic!”

One of the reasons Cavill is so popular online is because of his nerd status. Besides building his own gaming PC, he was also an avid fan of The Witcher and Warhammer 40,000. He had already lost the role of Geralt despite his passion, but a lot of people were rooting for him to be able to push forward with Warhammer.

Admittedly, the world of Warhammer is so vast and out there that it would demand a huge production to pull off. The armies of soldiers in power armor alone would cost a pretty penny. Even the Fallout series could only make several suits they had to duplicate multiple times digitally to pull off the Brotherhood of Steel faction.

Not to mention, Warhammer 40,000 also comes with a very expansive lore, which means that it will have an established fanbase that it will have to please. As impressive as the production of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was, it still received a lot of online vitriol from Tolkien purists, and it’s very possible that the same thing could happen for the Warhammer series.

Either way, Cavill already has the support of the fanbase; it will depend on the series writing team and production to produce a faithful and well-received adaptation.

No release date has been set for Amazon’s Warhammer series, but it’s possible something could come out around 2026.
