A new Tomb Raider game is reportedly in the works!

With the series becoming 25 years old this year, it looks like 2021 will be a big one for the game series.

The franchise was rebooted in 2013, producing an inspiring trilogy that harnessed what made the series great while introducing new and exciting features.

Square Enix are back at it and bringing Lara Croft to the next-generation of consoles with a brand new title.

Leaks

Franchise Game Director Will Kerslake has said that this project will unify the ideas of the original PS1 games with the more recent reboot trilogy.

“We envision the future of Tomb Raider unfolding after [the rebooted trilogy], telling stories that build upon both the breadth of Core Design and Crystal Dynamics’ games, looking to unify these timelines,” he said.

“With Tomb Raider’s extensive history, this is not an easy task, and we ask for patience as we go through the process.”

The Official Tomb Raider account also tweeted out a new video claiming that they are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the franchise all year.

It won't turn 25 until October - but with such a bold statement, it's almost certain that a new flagship game will be announced this year.

Release Date

Given the fact that they have claimed an announcement isn't due in the near future, we'd wager that the game will release in late 2022.

Expect a more detailed announcement later this year.

It's been almost 3 years since the last game was released.

What Is Tomb Raider?

The third-person action-adventure video game features players taking control of Lara Croft.

While the gameplay and stories have changed over the year, the past trilogy followed Lara's transformation into a veteran Tomb explorer and ruthless survivor.

The gameplay elements focus more on survival, although exploration is used within the game when exploring the island and various optional tombs.

Despite the game presenting in a linear format, players are free to roam areas and revisit locations throughout the game.

Developers

Given that Crystal Dynamics developed the past three games, successfully, we're expecting that the will return.

Platforms

The game will almost certainly launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

We anticipate it will also be released on the PS4 and Xbox One.

A Nintendo Switch offering is unknown as the game has yet to feature on the platform yet.

Price

We expect the game to retail for £59.99

Multiplayer

We're hoping that multiplayer will return once again in this game.

There were three types of games for players to compete in, played in five different maps: the modes are Team Deathmatch, Private Rescue and Cry for Help

The first mode pitted teams against each other and the winning team was the one to kill the opposing team in three separate matches.

In the second mode, the "survivors" team must take medical supplies to a specific point on the map, while the "scavengers" must reach a certain number of kills, both within a ten-minute time limit.

The third mode, Cry for Help, involves the "survivors" exploring the maps and retrieving batteries for defended radio beacons while being hunted by the "scavengers".

Across all three modes, weapons and destroyable environments from the single-player campaign are carried over.

DLC

DLC will likely be added again in the form of microtransactions.

Potentially as skins, weapon attachments and other cosmetics.

The trilogy also offered multiplayer map packs and even story expansions.
